PRE-EMPLOYMENT INSTRUCTION

Before you place a work-based learning student in to a paid or non-paid training site, there are a number of steps you should take.  Your student may have indicated to you a career preference or has no clear career goal at this time.  In either case, you need to validate your student's choice of career before the actual placement.  Follow these steps:

STEP ONE:

Self-Assessment

Conduct a self-assessment interest inventory for the purposes of validating your student's career interests.  Use a simple but yet effective inventory such as the Holland Code to complete this task.  You may use the NYS Career Zone site or use this Holland Interest Inventory document to complete the task.
STEP TWO:

Applying Holland Code

Now validate your student's Holland Code preferences to
  1. Choice of high school courses,
  2. Two year college majors and
  3. Four year college majors.
